Al-Imam al-Mahdi, The Just Leader of Humanity

This book is a good history of development of the power of Muctehids in shi'ite Islam. Author takes from the time of fifth Imam to current day and explains the development of the concept of Vilayat. Various forms of Vilayat is discussed as they are developed in time due to socio-political and theological reasons. Author dwells consifdearly on few major Muctehids, Tusi, Hilli, Mufid and Al-Murtada, with whom all started. The current interpretation by Sabzawari, Burujurdi or Humeyni are not covered with necessary depth. At the end the book has a nice appendix regarding the Khums and whom it belongs. I wish the book was to finalaze more exposition of current conditions and rulings. the concept of Vilayat had too many dimensions and author covers all of them with patient. Time to time you think that you already read that concept in prior paragraph but they all have small nuances depending on their definition. One needs to read very slowly. The best part of the book is that, Author with full patient when he uses a phrase that has a concept associated in it and was covered before repeats same in brackets to remaind readers what it was, so you do not have to refer any dictionary in the back of the book.

The Just Ruler in Shi’ite Islam

From the day the Prophet Muhammad began his mission in 610 C.E., inviting his family members to respond to the call of Islam, Ali, the son of Abu Talib, has figured prominently as a pious believer and an ardent supporter and warrior of Islam in the religious history of Islam. There is no doubt in the historicity of Ali as the champion of Islam. The pages of early history of Islam record countless events in which Ali was assigned by the Prophet to undertake one or another important mission connected with the development of the Umma. There is hardly any other figure in the entire history of Islam who compares with Ali in his loyalty to the Prophet and the teachings of Islam. At the-same time, Ali has been at the center of sectarian controversies and political factionalisms in the Muslim community. If one can trust Muslim authors of sectarian development (al-milal wa al-nihal) in Islam, almost every other faction in the community that separated itself from the majority Sunni community (ahl al-sunna wa al-djama'ah) upheld the belief that Ali ibn Abi Talib was endowed with some special qualities and supernatural endowments that set him apart from and above all other companions of the Prophet, and hence, most worthy of the leadership, the Imamate, after the Prophet...!

From History to Theology Ali (as) in Islamic Beliefs

The book consists of Quranic sciences topics such as Miracle, Distortion (Tahrif) and also commentary of the opening verse (Al-Fatiha). The book is a compilation of the author’s lectures at the theology school of Najaf.1

al-Sayyid Abu al-Qasim al Musawi al-Khui (1899-1992) was one of the most respected and widely acclaimed authorities on Twelver Shi'ite Islam in this century. This book, which was first published in Arabic in 1974, presents al-Khuis comprehensive introduction to the history of the Quran. In it, al-Khui revisits many critical and controversial topics connected with the collection and ultimate canonization of the text that have received little attention in contemporary Muslim scholarship since the classical age. For instance, he tackles what is probably the single most controversial subject in Quranic studies: the question of possible alterations to the Quran as maintained by some succeeding generations of compilers of the Quran.

Abdulaziz Sachedina is Professor and International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) Chair in Islamic Studies at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.
Biography
He has been a professor since 1975. He annually teaches courses on Classical Islam, Islam in the Modern Age, Islam, Democracy and Human Rights, Islamic Bioethics and Muslim Theology. He was born in Tanzania, his heritage originally is from India. He has an MA/PhD from the University of Toronto and has BA degrees from Aligarh Muslim University in India and Ferdowsi University of Mashad in Iran. He was one of the students of Dr. Ali Shariati in Iran.
In 1997, Grand Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani thanked him for his translation of a book on Imam Mahdi into English, originally written by Ayatollah Ebrahim Amini. The acknowledgement letter was published by the Iranian Hawza magazine.
In 1998, Grand Ayatollah Sistani issued a statement against Sachedina that advised Muslims not to listen to his talks or to ask him questions about religious matters. (See original text in Persian).
In addition to his work at the university, Professor Sachedina has been a consultant to the Department of Defense regarding Middle Eastern affairs and was an adviser to those drafting the Constitution of Iraq that was put into effect in 2005.
