Al-Ghazzali on Repentance

For pious Muslims of the Sufi persuasion, abstinence is a necessary virtue for the conduct of spiritual exercises leading to union with God. They preached against all that which distracted from concentration on the worship of God. They looked upon excessive eating and copulation as the major media of distraction, a sort of ailment to be shunned and if too entrenched, a weakness to be overcome by rigorous exercises. Marriage was recommended only as a last resort for those whose sexual urges were too strong to contain. The Sufi perception tended to contradict the official Muslim conviction that marriage was necessary for the propagation of race and faith and accounted for much of the date that centered on the subject historically.
The author of this work, Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (1058-1111), is generally regarded as the leading theologian and synthesizer of Sunni and Sufi perceptions of Islam. He is credited with enshrining the Ash'arite system in the main body of Islamic theology as the sole unchallenged creed of Islam. Professor Hitti refers to him as the "father of the church in Islam" and the final authority for Sunni, or Islamic orthodoxy.' Al-Ghazali Abstinence in Islam

'Work for your terrestrial life in proportion to your location in it, and work for your afterlife in proportion to your eternity in it.' This is part of the advice that the great theologian and mystic Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (1058-1111 AD) put down in his Letter to a Disciple. An old disciple of al-Ghazali had studied the Islamic sciences, including the many works of his master, for most of his life. Chapter One: Imam Al Ghazali discusses the Excellence of the Qur'an, the people concern with it's recitation and neglect of those who fail to fulfil the Quran's rights. Chapter Two: Deals with external rules of Tilawat, from cleanliness to reciting in beautiful slow manner. Chapter Three: Deals with the internal rules of Tilawat, from attempting to appreciate the Magnificent of Devine speech to getting rid of any sense of power, ability and looking at once self with satisfaction and purification. Chapter Four: Imam Al Ghazali, explains the prohibition of Qur'an explanation (tafsir) by personal opinion (bir-ra'j) and weather this is a comprehensive prohibition or limited to concerned cases.

Imam Abu Hamid Muhammad Ghazali(450 - 505 AH) , son of Muhammad, was an Iranian philosopher, theologian, and jurist, and one of the greatest men of Sufism in the fifth century AH. His full name is Abu Hamid Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Ghazali al-Shafi'i, nicknamed Hojjat al-Islam Zayn al-Din al-Tusi.
Birth
"Abu Hamid Muhammad Ghazali" was born in 450 or 451 AH in "Tabaran" (one of the cities of Tus).
Reason for Ghazali's name
His father was a poor man who had a job as a wool seller in the market, and perhaps that is why he was called "Ghazali".
Education
"Ghazali" began his elementary education in his hometown with "Ahmad Razkani". Then he went to Nishapur and attended the lessons of "Imam Juwayni". Due to his great study and hard work, he was considered one of the elders and scholars in a short time. From Nishapur, he went to the presence of the Seljuk minister Khwaja Nizam al-Mulk and was welcomed and respected.
Participation in debates
In debates that were held in the presence of the Khwaja, he actively participated and debated with the elders; so much so that he became famous and well-known that Nizam al-Mulk entrusted him with teaching at the Nizamiyah School in Baghdad.
Professors and students
Among his prominent professors, in addition to Juwayni, are Qadi Abu al-Fath, the ruler of Tusi, Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Khwari, and Abu Suhayl Muhammad ibn Ubaydullah Hafsi, and among his students are Abu al-Khattab and Ibn Aqeel, who were among the elders of the Hanbali school.
Works
"Abu Hamid" has left behind many works, including "Nasihah al-Muluk, Faza'il al-An'am, Fars-nama, Al-Kimiya al-Sa'adat, Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din, Tahafat al-Falasifah, Al-Wujir fi furu' al-Fiqh, Al-Mustasfi, Sir al-'Alameen, and Kashf ma fi al-Dar'in wa al-Maznun bi 'Ali ghair ahl-ahla" (Discovery of what is in the world and what is suspected of being Ali).
Death
Finally, after about half a century of life, on Monday, Jumada al-Akhira, 505 AH, he passed away at his residence.
Ghazali and Philosophy
Ghazali's theories in philosophy are mostly critical. In his philosophical works, while presenting a simple report of the opinions of philosophers, he criticizes them with subtlety and scrutiny. Abu Hamid had extraordinary intellectual independence and launched a real struggle against the philosophies of Aristotle and Plato and Muslim representatives (such as al-Farabi and Ibn Sina).
